Dmitriy Grek - The Breathing of Space

Depicting perspective has preoccupied artists throughout art history. Representations of space in figurative art convey essential beliefs of that society at that stage in time. The dominant trends in classical, medieval and contemporary art allow us to map the evolution of beliefs. One should mention the merger and interpenetration of space, time and movement in art, among other phenomena.

In order to better understand the imagery-formation in new art, one should factor in all expressive means, including perspective, tectonics, static and dynamic images. The space of my sculptures consists of certain structured parts, including the space the object exists in; the space closed off by the figure's volume, and the space as an unknowable void. My works are held together by the sculptural sense, aesthetic dimension of art and impulses that help to complete the forms. They are airy like breathing. Sculptures fill the space, but they are nevertheless harmoniously elegant and ethereal.
